Moodboard
I have chosen to do R&B for the genre of my music magazine. I have created a mood board of images featureing current artists in the R&B field. I have included a variety of images from photoshoots, album covers and press event of the artists to give me a wide range. Artists I have used are Nicki Minaj, Rizzle Kicks, Taio Cruz, Usher, Beyonce, JLS and Chris Brown.
Richard Dyers Star Theroy
Richard Dyers 'Star Theroy' came from his thought that their was a distinct differance between pop starts appose to pop performers. He believe pop performers where not nessicerily famous but sang whereas a pop start was not just all about the music.
He believe that a pop star was then constructed into what the industry believed would sell or what magazines want to be on their magzine. Pop starts have their own image that audience then also imitate or even cultural values they believe poeple will then follow.

Pop stars can be seen as actors - images are constantly changed to match
ideologies of the time - getting publicity
enables them to remain in the spotlight
For example, it could be said that Madonna has stayed in the
public eye for so long due to her changing image, publicised divorce with Guy
Ritchie, and adoptions as well as her following of the religion
"Kaballah."

Feminist theroy
Depending on perception when it comes
to looking at media text, feminists see media led by a male society or male
dominated order, designed to objectify woman and sex objects and used for the ‘male
gaze’ only featured for there appearance or ‘assets’. Feminism was therefore the
result in society’s assumption that women’s looks where purely for male
attention and that woman should be subservient to men. Until feminism women
were treated as objects, only useful in a male world.
This front cover of Rolling Stone music magazine shows Katy Perry in her underwear perched in a seductive pose on a bed. As she is in minimal clothing this leads to the assumption that this magazine is aimed to attract a male audience.

Strapline - The strapline is used to sum up a story.
Puff - A puff is a section or graphic that promotes other contents in that edition.
Masthead - It's found on the cover of a newspaper, usually at the top, and gives the name of thenewspaper.
House Style - The house style distinguishes the newspaper from it's competitors, as it's known for it'sdistinctive design.
Splash - This is the main story on the front page of a newspaper, it features the most important news in a striking way.
Byline - To highlight the writer of the story because people often like reading article by specific writers.
Picture Caption - Title explains photograph or provides you with useful information on it.
Headline - A headline is the title of the newspaper article. It is usually in a large font across the top of the front page, and placed above or below the masthead.
Sub-Heading - A title, or heading, of a subdivision.
Lure - The lure is what makes the consumers want to read the article.
Support Story - A support article is a minor story that can be seen on a small area of the front cover, and often include a cross-reference.
Dateline - The dateline shows the date of the magazines release date, and the price lets the reader know how much it will cost.
Earpiece area - The earpiece area is also known as the pug feeder. Used for logos and promotion, they're usually at the top left and right-hand corners of the paper.
Cross-Referance - This tells the reader that the article carries on into another page; "turn to page 2".
Page lead - The page lead is the first paragraph of a newspaper article. It should inform the reader of the basic content of the story, the rest of the article will then improve on it. The lead is usually written in bold or capitals.

Rule of thirds and Dept of field
The rule of thirds is applied by lining up the subject of the picture with the guide lines and their intersection, usually the bottom horizontal line lies on the horizon. The theroy suggests the best place to place a main image in on one of the 4 center points.
The area within the depth of field appears sharp, while the areas in front of and beyond the depth of field appear blurry.
This theroy is used to apply veiwers focus to certain objects.
Qualitative and Quantitive research
Qualitative questions are open questions where lines are left for answers and explanations. For example, if people where asked 'Do you play a instrument?' you would then have a choice of saying yes or naming instruments that you play. The answers you get from qualitative questions are more detailed and more realistic to the question.
Quantitive questions are where you are given a set of answers to choose from for example number 1-5 when rating something. For example, if people where asked 'How would you rate your local newspaper?' they would then have chance to rate how strong/weak they feel the newspaper is. The answers found are then easy to collate and then to show statistics, therefore only find answers that are relevant.

What's this work all about?
For our media coursework we have been asked to create a new a music magazine I will include and design a front cover, contents page and double page spread. I will use my own photographs to create the front cover and to focus on one chosen artist. In order to do this I will distinguish a target audience and then research into potential designs. Also I will review two music magazine front covers, two contents pages and 2 double page spreads, this will help me distinguish a layout to my magazine. We have been asked to also create the front page of a college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus text and a masthead and a mock-up of a contents page. To do this i will analyse a few college magazines noticing strong points to help me with the production element.
